Activating Prior Knowledge

According to cognitive psychologists, learners develop understandings through connections they make among those things they know and have experienced, and those things they are learning.

At the beginning of a unit or lesson, teachers can help students activate their prior knowledge, or even build the background for those students who may lack prior knowledge of a particular content topic using the KWL chart or the revised KWL chart.
By the end of the unit or lesson, students will be able to brainstorm what they already know about a topic, identify what they would like to learn about it, list what they have learned about this topic, and confirm or disprove information on the chart while adding newly learned information.
